Student-Owned Computing: Using Laptops on Campus

Compute Wherever You Like

Most of the common areas on campus are covered by a wireless signal, allowing you to work from nearly anywhere on campus. As new buildings are planned, constructed, and renovated, laptop use is considered when placing electrical outlets as well as wireless access.

If you plan to use your laptop regularly on campus wifi, you should register your computer with eduroam. This service allows you to connect to the wifi automatically at any point on campus without having to log in with your Unity ID each time.

One of the benefits of student-owned laptops is the ability students have to collaborate. Students can work on group projects synchronously from different locations or gather with their laptops in the same place.

Engineering Collaboratories

Engineering Collaboratories are specially configured rooms or areas of Eos labs where students, faculty, and staff can meet to work on projects together. Designed with technology to support collaborative work and interaction, these learning spaces typically have one or two Eos workstations connected to a 42-inch monitor, with network connections for individual laptops.

Guidelines for In-Class Use

In addition to instructor-led exercises where students actively use their laptops in class, many students find it beneficial to use their laptops to take notes. This is a matter of personal preference. Faculty can also make class policies regarding laptop use during class. Consider yourself allowed to use laptops in class unless instructed otherwise.
