Reinstalling Personal Machines

In the case that a student requires their computer to be reinstalled, follow the steps below after you have verified in an email that their data has been backed up.

Note:  Your product key will be needed for this process.

Reinstalling an OS

  1. VERIFY IN AN EMAIL THAT THE USER’S DATA HAS BEEN BACKED UP AND IT IS OK TO REINSTALL THE COMPUTER.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. When the splash screen appears, click on F12 to enter the boot menu.
  4. Boot to USB.
  5. The Install Windows screen should now appear. Follow the instructions presented, but when asked, “Which type of installation do you want?”, choose Custom (advanced).
  6. When asked, “Where do you want to install Windows?” click on Drive Options.
  7. Select Delete.
  8. Delete all partitions.
NOTE: Be aware that deleting backup partitions may result in future problems or issues on personal machines. Do not delete partitions whose names include “backup” or “restore”. You will not be able to restore your copy of Windows without the backup/restore partition and will have to buy a new copy.
  9. Once all partitions are deleted, click Next and the Windows installation process will begin.

Dual Boot (Ubuntu, WOM)

Currently, ITECS does not dual boot personal computers with Linux. ITECS can provide links to instructions online to dual boot computers. If the user runs into any issues during the install process, Service Desk employees can help reinstall Windows on their computer.
