Installing programs while in Safe Mode can avoid certain software conflicts that prevent programs from installing correctly.
To Boot In Safe Mode:
Windows 8
Method 1
- Press Shift while clicking Restart.
- A screen should pop up with three options. On this screen, select Troubleshoot.
- Click Advanced Options.
- Choose Startup settings.
- You will see a preview list of options that will appear if you continue. Press Restart in the lower right-hand corner.
- Select the number that corresponds to Enable Safe Mode with command prompt.
Method 2
- Press the Windows key + R.
- In the dialogue box that pops up, type ‘msconfig‘ and click Ok.
- Click the Boot tab.
- Select Alternate Shell.
- Click Apply.
- Click Ok.
- Restart the computer. [NOTE: to exit command prompt from this version, type ‘msconfig’ and then hit Enter.]
Windows 10
- Press and hold the Shift key.
- While keeping the Shift key held, click Restart.
- Next, Windows 10 will reboot and ask you to select an option. Choose Troubleshoot.
- On the Troubleshoot screen, click Advanced Options.
- Next, select Startup Settings.
- Press Restart.
- To enable Safe Mode with command prompt, press F6.
Mac
- Restart the computer.
- Press and hold the Shift key while it boots.
- Once you see an Apple logo and progress bar, stop holding the Shift key.
- You should now run the net start msiserver in an elevated command prompt. From here, you should be able to install programs in Safe Mode.
Note: To leave safe mode, reboot without holding the Shift key.
