How To Install A Printer On Your Personal Windows Computer

The following instructions are for installing an ITECS printer on a personal computer. For installing a printer on a WOLFTECH Domain-Joined Computer, please check out this page for instructions.

For Windows

  1. Open the Printers & Scanners window.
  2. Click the button labeled Add a printer or scanner.
  3. The Add Printer wizard will now start. Select The Printer that I want isn’t listed option beneath the list of discovered printers. This will open the Add Printer window.
  4. Select Add a printer using a TCP/IP address or hostname and click Next.
  5. Set Device type to TCP/IP Device and type in the printer’s full hostname under “Hostname” (the hostname should be found on a label on the printer). Leave Port name and the checkbox below the default.
    1. You will need to use the full name of the printer, which differs based on department, see the following for examples (where “Hostname is the name labeled on the printer):
      1. CCEE:  hostname.ce.ncsu.edu
      2. CBE:  hostname.che.ncsu.edu
      3. In the event you are unable to use the full name of the printer you may use the IP address of the printer, which can be found by printing a configuration page.
  6. On the “Additional port information required” page, click Next.
  7. On the “Install the printer driver” page, select the proper driver based on the model of printer. If you do not have one for the model, you will need to download a driver from the manufacturer’s website or use a generic PCL driver. You can find the HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL6 for HP printers HERE. Click Next.
  8. On the “Type a printer name” page, enter what you would like the printer name to be. Typically use the same name as the hostname used above.
  9. On the “Printer Sharing” page, select Do not share this printer and click Next.
  10. Click Print a test page to make sure your computer can print. If it cannot, please send an email to eoshelp@ncsu.edu for additional help.
