Civil Graduate Student FAQ

Computer Setup

I need a new computer and need a recommendation on what to purchase.
ITECS can assist you by recommending a computer for you to purchase if you list the required specifications and what function the computer will serve (i.e., basic workstation or running data computations constantly).
Please email eoshelp@ncsu.edu with this information.

I have received a brand new computer. How do I get it set up?
When the computer arrives, contact ITECS at eoshelp@ncsu.edu stating where the computer is to be picked up. We will need email confirmation from your adviser that we can grant you access to the computer. Next, we will install the computer and provide any university licensed software.

A computer was just assigned to me and I am unable to log into the computer. I am getting the error, “No logon servers available”.
Contact ITECS at eoshelp@ncsu.edu and provide the computer name. If your professor is the owner of the computer, have them send us an email verifying your access to the computer. Otherwise, with the computer name, we can look up the owner of the computer.

My computer is old and unable to function properly with the current software. What can I do?
ITECS recommends you contact your adviser concerning this issue since we are unable to provide a new computer. The purchasing process is done through your professor.

I need to install some software on my computer. How do I do this?
Graduate students have administrative access on their assigned computers. Therefore, you are able to install the software that you require.

I have a computer, and I would like it reinstalled.
ITECS needs to know the faculty member involved and if they need the data currently on the machine. If they need the data, where will the faculty member store the data? This is important information ITECS needs before we reinstall the machine and lose the data.

My Unity ID password has been updated on my personal computer. Do I need to re-add a printer?
Yes, for personal laptops (or any unmanaged computer), if your Unity ID password is updated, the printer will have to be removed and re-added. Otherwise, your computer will continually try to connect the the printer using the old password and will lock your Unity ID account for 10 minutes. Re-adding the printer will allow the computer to connect to the printer with the new password.

Software

What university licensed software can be installed on my computer?
This link lists most of the software that can be installed on your computer: https://it.engr.ncsu.edu/software/catalog/
If you have any questions about other software please contact us at eoshelp@ncsu.edu.

Backups

Is my computer’s C: Drive automatically backed up anywhere?
Your computer’s C: Drive is not backed up anywhere automatically. In the event that a hard drive fails, any data on the drive usually cannot be restored. ITECS recommends that any important data saved to the C: Drive be backed up in another external location.

Hardware

How do I upgrade the hardware on my computer?
All purchases for the Civil Department are done through the department. Please contact your adviser concerning any of these purchases. ITECS can provide recommendations for the specific hardware upgrade that you require.

How do I get external computer peripherals (monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc)?
ITECS does not provide any computer peripherals for the Civil Department. Please contact your advisor for any peripheral including the following: monitors, mouse, keyboard, monitor cables, printer USB cables, etc.
