Installing SolidWorks 2018-2019 EDU

Installing SolidWorks 2018-2019 EDU

Important Notes

  • SolidWorks only runs on Windows. If you have a Mac, you will need to obtain and install Windows via Apple’s Boot Camp before installing SolidWorks.
  • You must have a 64-bit version of Windows installed on your computer. The vendor no longer provides a 32-bit version of SolidWorks.
  • You must have access to the NCSU network to run SolidWorks. This can be done on-campus by connecting to the NCSU wireless network or off-campus by connecting through VPN (see vpn.ncsu.edu for more information).

Before Beginning

Run Windows Update, check for updates, and install any important updates that are available.

It’s recommended that you fully remove any previous versions of SolidWorks that may be installed.

The SolidWorks installation is contained in an ISO file that must be mounted. Windows 8 and Windows 10 have the ability to mount an ISO file built-in. Windows 7, however, does not. If you are installing SolidWorks on a computer running Windows 7 you will need to download and install a third party application first. We recommend WinCDEmu. You can find information, installation, and use instructions on their download page.

Installing SolidWorks

  1. Mount the ISO file you downloaded (on Windows 8.x or 10, right-click the ISO file and choose Open with Windows Explorer).
  2. If an AutoPlay window is displayed, double-click Open folder to view files. If not, use Windows Explorer to navigate to the root level of the image drive.
  3. Double-click StartSWInstall.hta.
  4. In the installer window, click the Install SolidWorks products now button. If you are asked whether you want to allow the program to make changes to the computer, click Yes.
** Note: If you click the button and nothing happens, you may run the installation command from the command line. Open up a command prompt, change to the appropriate drive letter for the DVD/ISO, and enter the following command:
    .\sldim\sldIM.exe /adminclient /new /source .\AdminDirector.xml /norunsw
  5. The SolidWorks installation will begin and should progress automatically. Once the installation is complete, you may close the installer window.
  6. You may want to keep the ISO file if you need to uninstall or reinstall SolidWorks in the future. Otherwise, you may delete it from your system.

To uninstall SolidWorks, follow steps 1-3 above, check the appropriate boxes, and click the Uninstall SolidWorks products now button.

Running SolidWorks

Your machine must be connected to the internet every time you run SolidWorks.

The first time you start SolidWorks, you will need to accept the license agreement.

  1. If you are on the campus wireless network, you must be connected to ncsu and not ncsu-guest.
  2. If you are off-campus, you will first need to run Cisco AnyConnect. Type vpn.ncsu.edu in the Connect To field and click Connect. If you have not previously installed AnyConnect, additional information can be found at http://vpn.ncsu.edu.
  3. Start SolidWorks by clicking the shortcut on the desktop, via the Start Menu (Windows 7 and Windows 10), or by clicking the SolidWorks tile (Windows 8/8.1).
