General Notes

Microsoft has stopped supporting Office 2016, and the campus license for MathType 6.9d (released in 2018) does not work with more recent versions of MS Office. To maintain access to MathType for users within COE, ITECS purchased a 1-year test license in November 2025.

This license serves as a controlled test, permitting limited usage of MathType within COE through November 2026. After that time, ITECS will explore options to extend this license.


Additional info

  • The COE license is for 25 faculty licenses, and each comes with 40 student licenses.
  • The key and functionality are the same for both license types, so the result is 1025 total licenses.
  • The license includes MathType for Microsoft 365 (Word/Powerpoint) and Google Workspace (Docs/Slides).
  • The license does not include MathType for LMS (e.g. Moodle) or for the downloadable MathType program (as the vendor plans to discontinue it).
User Agreement
MathType is made available to you through the College of Engineering's MathType license. The NC State College of Engineering is ordering the right for you to use MathType for academic-related purposes. Installation of this software on a computer owned by a business other than NC State University is strictly prohibited. You are authorized to use MathType while you are enrolled in, or employed by, NC State. Your acceptance of this agreement indicates that you understand and will comply with the requirements of the MathType license: I will not provide this key to anyone else nor install it on anyone else's computer for them. I understand that redistribution of this software is strictly prohibited and is a violation of the terms and conditions of the license agreement and the NC State University Computing Policy. I understand that I am licensed to use this software for academic coursework and teaching only, and will not use this software for commercial purposes. I will discontinue use of MathType, and will uninstall the software, when I leave NC State.
