WordPress Sites

NC State University offers free WordPress hosting for students, staff and faculty to create personal websites like portfolios, CVs and academic projects. Sites are hosted on fourth-level domains (yourname.wordpress.ncsu.edu) with access to various themes and plugins. You can collaborate with anyone who has an NC State email address and your site stays active as long as it has an active NC State editor, has been updated within a year or receives over 1,000 monthly visits.

Google Sites

Google Sites is a free website builder that’s part of Google Workspace, designed for creating simple websites without coding knowledge. It offers drag-and-drop functionality with basic templates and integrates seamlessly with other Google services. It’s user-friendly and good for basic informational sites, internal team pages or simple portfolios, but has limited customization options and fewer features compared to platforms like WordPress. It’s best suited for users who need a quick, straightforward website.

Departmental Websites

.org Websites

In some cases, you may need to have a domain name that’s not under the NC State domain. For example, if you are working on an inter-institutional project, a .org domain may be a better fit for you. All such domains must be approved by the University before you may use them. We strongly encourage you to consult with Engineering Web Services or your local IT staff prior to purchasing your chosen domain name to avoid any potential conflicts or issues that may arise from your use of an external domain name. Domain squatting (registering multiple versions of the same domain name) is highly discouraged.

Webtools is Engineering IT’s platform for hosting custom software applications on AWS servers. This domain houses specialized tools that support various departmental operations, including donation monitoring, accreditation preparation assistance, release time calculations and academic event scheduling and staffing. Each individual tool operates on its own fourth-level domain name, providing dedicated access to specific functionality while maintaining the centralized Webtools infrastructure. Engineering IT also allows other developers to host their tools on the Webtools platform when appropriate.
