User Identification and Authentication (UIA)

User Identification and Authentication (UIA) is an online verification procedure implemented by the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and used by University help desks to identify NC State users who make telephone requests to have their passwords reset. In the past, individuals were required to either verify their identity in person or fax a copy of their NC State-issued identification to have their password reset. The UIA verification process now requires that you complete a simple survey containing three questions and answers that will be used as verification of your identity by University Help Desk personnel.

NOTE: If you created UIA questions on or before May 8, 2017, they were not transferred into the new Identity Management System. You MUST re-create new questions to get them transferred into the new system.

To set up your UIA questions and answers:

  1. Visit the following link: https://www.acs.ncsu.edu/scripts/authentication/UIA_Main.pl
  2. Log in with your Unity ID and password.
  3. Enter your three personal questions and answers. Make sure that these questions and answers are familiar only to you.
  4. Click Submit.
  5. If you need to make adjustments to these questions or answers at any time, you may log in, enter new questions and answers, and click Submit.

Once you have set up your UIA, if you need to have your password reset, contact the NC State University Help Desk at 515-HELP for assistance. Using your Unity ID, a staff member will locate your questions and answers and use these to verify your identity by asking for your response to one or more of these questions prior to resetting your password.

If you cannot answer your questions you will be required to bring a picture ID to the West Dunn Building in order for your password to be reset. If you experience technical difficulties with UIA, contact the NC State University Help Desk at 515-HELP or help@ncsu.edu.
