Using Command Prompt or Terminal

For Mac/Linux
  1. In the bar along the top of the screen click on Go, and then select Utilities. Scroll through items until you find “Terminal”.
  2. Click on Terminal.
  3. Type in “hostname” and hit Enter.
  4. The computer name will appear on the next line in the Terminal or Command Prompt.
For Windows
  1. Go to the Start menu and type “Command Prompt“.
  2. Click on Command Prompt.
  3. Type in “hostname” and hit Enter.
  4. The computer name will appear on the next line in the Terminal or Command Prompt.

 

Other ways of retrieving a computer name

  • There should be a sticker that has the computer name located on the tower or on the top of a laptop.
  • If you are using a Windows machine, you can run the ITECS Computer Tool by typing that into the start menu. Once the tool runs, it generates the computer name along with the MAC address and other info.
  • From the login screen on a Windows computer, in the Username field, type exactly: .\
  • While logged in, the name can be found in System Info as well as in bottom left in Computer.
  • If you can’t get Windows to boot for some reason, you can look up the MAC address in Infoblox and find the name there.
